Hygroscopicity and humidity release of
CELLUFLOW™ C-25
CELLUFLOW™ is a porous cellulose fine particle powder. Therefore, it exhibits excellent hygroscopicity and humidity release. As CELLUFLOW™ C-25 has particularly high hydrophilicity, it has high hygroscopicity and can contain large amount of water.

Hygroscopicity at 25 degree C and 80% humidity
Method
- Dried the particles at 60 degree C under decompression at overnight.
- After the decompression pressure was released, the weight of the particles were measured to obtain the dry weight immediately.
- Put dried particles in a desiccator set to a temperature of 25 degree C and a relative humidity of 80%, and measured the change in weight over time.

Humidity release at 25 degree C and 25% humidity
Method
- After putting the particles at a temperature of 25 degree C and a humidity of 80% for 2 days or more, the weight was measured.
- The particles were placed in a desiccator set to a temperature of 25 degree C and a relative humidity of 25 %, and measured the change in weight over time.

Moisture absorption and release depending on environment
Adjusts to the surrounding humidity like breathing
Because CELLUFLOW™ C-25 is highly hydrophilic, it absorbs surrounding moisture and increases in weight. The figure on the left shows weight change data when Cellflow is placed in various humidity environments ranging from 25% to 80%. When CELLUFLOW™ is left under high humidity, it exhibits high hygroscopicity, and its weight does not change much under low humidity.
For example, CELLUFLOW™ C-25 absorbs sweat according to the amount of sweat that comes out of the pores. For this reason, it is effective in preventing makeup from fading due to sebum.

The figure on the left shows the data obtained when CELLUFLOW™ C-25 was allowed to fully absorb moisture in an environment with a humidity of 80%, and then left to stand still in an environment with a humidity of 25% and 60%. The weight of CELLUFLOW™ C-25 decreased when it was left standing under various humidity conditions. Therefore, it can be seen that the moisture is released according to the surrounding humidity environment.
Sustained release of
water-soluble dye
CELLUFLOW™ C-25 is a highly hydrophilic cellulose powder. For this reason, it has a sustained release property that slowly releases the water-soluble dye taken inside the cellulose particles. Hydrophilicity is a unique feature of cellulose based material with many hydroxyl groups.
Method
- Weigh 0.5 g of each particle into a 100 ml beaker.
- Add 50 ml of 1% dye solution (trypan blue) to each beaker and stir for 1 hour to adsorb the dye.
- Remove the dye solution by filter filtration.
- Dry each particle for 2 hours in a dry heater at 80%
- Place 0.4 g of dried particles in a centrifuge tube and add 5 ml of water.
- Disperse the particles throughout the water, and then shake at room temperature for 30 minutes.
- Centrifuge at 5000 rpm for 5 minutes and transfer the supernatant to another test tube.
- Replace water every 30 minutes as described above.
- Measure the absorbance of each eluate and obtain the dye concentration from the calibration curve.

Achieves high coverage power by prescribing foundation
CELLUFLOW™ C-25 exhibits excellent optical properties due to its unique sponge structure.
The sponge structure causes light to be highly scattered inside the particles.
Therefore, by prescribing it in the foundation, it is possible to give high coverage to hide wrinkles, stains and pores.
The sponge structure of CELLUFLOW™ C-25 has the characteristic of absorbing oil.
Oils such as sebum can cause makeup to come off.
CELLUFLOW™ C-25 has a unique sponge structure that optimally absorbs sebum, which causes makeup to come off.
With this feature, you can prevent makeup from coming off. From these characteristics, by prescribing CELLUFLOW™ C-25 to the foundation, it is possible to give high coverage and long lasting effect.

Changes in foundation brightness L * due to oil contamination

Excellent coverage to hide dull skin
To confirm the effect of sebum, 10% of liquid paraffin was added and the coverage power before and after the addition of oil was evaluated. Brightness L * is an index showing the brightness of a color. As the coverage power (L *) approaches 1, the difference in brightness between the white background (skin color) and the black background (dull skin) disappears. In other words, it shows that it has a coverage power to hide dull skin. The coverage power of CELLUFLOW™ C-25 did not change even with oil (a model substance for sebum). CELLUFLOW™ C-25 has the feature of suppressing makeup loss due to sebum.
Measuring method
- Preparation of foundation
*Dry sample: 10% prescription of CELLUFLOW™ C-25 in a commercial foundation
*Wet sample: Add 10% liquid paraffin to Dry sample
*The foundation without particles is used as a blank. - Sticked double-sided tape (3 cm x 3 cm) on a transparent plastic sheet, and applied the sample to the tape surface so that the amount was 10 mg.
- Took two sheets of black and white paper and placed the sample on top.
- Each of the white and black areas of colored paper were measured by color difference meter to evaluate the brightness L*.
- Coverage power (L *) was calculated by the following formula.
Coverage power (L *) = Black area L * / White area L *
Changes in foundation saturation C * due to oil contamination

Vivid colors that do not change even when sebum comes out
Saturation C * is an indicator of color vividness. CELLUFLOW™ C-25 maintains its saturation even with oil. The color of the foundation changes depending on the sebum, and the coverage power to hide the stains is lost. By adding CELLUFLOW™ C-25, you can maintain vivid colors for a long time.
Measuring method
- Prepared samples by the above method.
- Saturation was calculated as follows.
Changes in foundation glossiness due to oil contamination

Function to suppress the shine caused by sebum
Glossiness is an indicator of the shine of the foundation. When sebum comes out, the optical characteristics change and the shine comes out. CELLUFLOW™ can suppress the feeling of shine even if sebum comes out.
Measuring method
- Prepared samples by the above method.
- Measured the white part of colored paper with a gloss meter.
Achievement of uniform application of foundation
By adding CELLUFLOW™ C-25 into the foundation, uniform application can be achieved. The foundation can be applied uniformly not only when the skin is dry but also when it is wet with sebum. CELLUFLOW™ C-25 has a porous structure. CELLUFLOW™ C-25 absorbs sebum that it avoids the aggregation of foundation.

- Measure the brightness (L) of 6 points on the film with a color difference meter.
- Evaluate the variance of brightness (L)/
The lower the variance, the more uniform application.

For improving the slippness of foundation
Adding CELLUFLOW™ C-25 to the foundation reduces the dynamic friction coefficient . Therefore, the slipness of the foundation can be expected to improve by adding CELLUFLOW™ C-25. Since CELLUFLOW™ C-25 has a porous structure, it absorbs sebum moderately. So even if skin is wet with sebum, the agglutination of the foundation is suppressed.
